The short version: fly into Liberia, come between December and April if you want dry, rent something with clearance or let us drive you.

Which airport

Liberia (LIR) is about an hour and a half away and is the one to aim for. San José (SJO) works but adds roughly four hours of driving.

When to come

December to April is the dry season — reliable sun, bigger crowds elsewhere, though Avellanas stays quiet. May to November is greener and cheaper, with rain usually arriving in the afternoon rather than lasting all day. Surf is good year round.

Do you need a car?

If you plan to explore, yes, and take four-wheel drive — the last stretch of road is dirt. If you mostly plan to be at the property and the beach, our vans cover airport runs and excursions and you can skip the rental entirely.

Check-in

Check in after 4:00 PM, check out before 10:00 AM. Someone is always on site to let you through the gate.

A note on the road

The last stretch into Avellanas is dirt and can be rough — guests mention it. If you are renting, take four-wheel drive. If you would rather not deal with it, our vans handle the airport run and excursions.

Entry

Most visitors from the US, Canada, UK and EU enter without a visa for up to ninety days. You will need a passport valid for the length of your stay and proof of onward travel. Check current requirements before you fly.

What to bring

• Reef-safe sunscreen — the sun here is stronger than it feels
• Insect repellent for dusk
• A rash guard if you're surfing more than a day
• Cash in colones for small places; cards work in most
• Nothing formal. Nobody here is wearing it.
