Why schools keep coming back

Surf schools book Johnny's for weeks at a time, and the reason is logistics. Everything a camp needs is inside one gate.

  • A three-minute walk to the water. No van run before dawn, no loading boards.
  • Twenty-eight beds in six rooms. Instructors get their own room; students double up.
  • Breakfast is included and served early enough for a first session.
  • Lunches and dinners can be added, so nobody breaks the day to find food.
  • Board storage and rinse-off outdoors, plus hammocks for the flat hours.
  • A yoga platform — most camps run a stretch session that pays for itself.
  • Airport transport in twelve-passenger vans from Liberia.

The break

Avellanas works most of the year. A beach break at the river mouth for beginners, a reef further down for everyone else, and Little Hawaii on a bigger swell.

Running a camp here

Most camps take the whole property so the group is alone on site. For a multi-week booking we'll work out a rate rather than run it week by week — send us your dates and headcount.

Alberto handles the practical side while you run the surfing: airport pickups, vehicles, excursion days when the swell drops, and anything that breaks.

Groups who have taken the whole place

★★★★★

“Johnny's Beach Bungalow is a hidden gem. We traveled all 16 of us, from age 3 to 75, for our renewal of vows, and we were blown away as Karla and her family hosted our event so beautifully. What made our stay memorable: the location — walking distance to tide pools and one of the best surfing spots; the people — Karla, Alberto, Luis, Emmanuel and the whole family accommodated our every request and went above and beyond cooking and serving the best Costa Rican meals, cleaning our rooms and driving us safely around town. The pool and yoga platform kept everyone active and relaxed at the same time, and they even hosted a chess tournament and a bonfire for us at the beach.”

★★★★★

“One of the best vacation rentals I have ever booked. I highly recommend opting for the Presidential Package — our group loved everything about it. From being picked up at the airport, to the delicious home-cooked meals, to the activity planning, we all felt, well, presidential. It was truly an experience like no other. The pool was a huge highlight. The beach is just at the end of the road, with a great spot for swimming without the rocks about 100 yards to the right, and if you keep going you can take surf lessons. Each bedroom having its own bathroom was great as well. With six separate units this place is perfect for a large family gathering or a mastermind retreat.”
