An offsite where nobody checks out early
The whole property, 28 beds, meals on site, and the beach three minutes away.
What's here
Retreats fail on logistics, not on content. Johnny's takes the logistics off you — one property on Playa Avellanas, 30 minutes from Tamarindo, sleeping up to 28.
A dedicated thatched platform for practice or sessions. A covered pavilion with a table that seats twelve for meals and workshops. Six rooms so participants aren't stacked four to a room. And Karla cooking, so nobody spends the week organizing food.
Take the whole property and the group has the place to itself — no other guests wandering through your morning session.
- Yoga platform — thatched, shaded, open-sided
- Covered pavilion seating 12
- Sleeps 28 in 6 rooms
- Gym on site
- All meals available, cooked here
- Massage can be arranged on the platform
- Airport transport from Liberia
Hosting a retreat in Costa Rica
If you lead retreats, the venue decides whether the week works. These are the questions worth asking before you sign for a yoga, wellness or surf retreat anywhere in Costa Rica — and how Johnny's answers them.
Where in Costa Rica should you host a retreat?
Most Costa Rica retreat centers — yoga, wellness or otherwise — sit in one of four places, and they are not interchangeable. Nosara and Santa Teresa are the established yoga towns — beautiful, well known, and both a long, rough drive from an international airport. The Osa Peninsula is wilder and further still. Guanacaste, where Johnny's is, trades some of that cachet for the thing retreat leaders actually feel on arrival day: Liberia International is ninety minutes away on paved road, and it takes direct flights from most of the United States and Canada.
That difference compounds. A group flying into Liberia at midday is on the yoga platform before sunset. The same group flying into San José for Nosara or Santa Teresa loses most of a day each way — two of your seven nights spent traveling, on a trip they paid you for.
What a retreat venue needs to have
The listings all photograph well. Whether you are running a yoga retreat, a wellness retreat or a corporate offsite, the same five things separate a venue that runs smoothly from one that eats your week:
- Enough beds that nobody is stacked four deep. Johnny's sleeps 28 across 6 bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom and its own door outside. Participants who pay retreat prices should not be queuing for a shared bathroom.
- A dedicated practice space. An open-sided thatched platform here, not a cleared corner of a living room. Shaded all day, far enough from the bedrooms that a 6am class wakes nobody.
- Meals handled by someone who is not you. Karla cooks breakfast every morning; lunch and dinner are $30 a head per day. Food is the single biggest thing that goes wrong on a self-catered retreat.
- Exclusive use. Take the whole property and the group has it to itself — no other guests crossing your morning session.
- Transport that already exists. Two 12-passenger vans, Alberto driving. Liberia transfers run $400 per van for up to 12 people and $550 for 15–20.
What it costs to host a retreat in Costa Rica
The arithmetic that matters is cost per participant per night, not the headline nightly rate. A venue that sleeps 28 divides across far more people than a six-bedroom villa that sleeps twelve, which is why a property this size tends to undercut a dedicated retreat center per head even when the nightly figure looks larger.
Then add the variable cost you control: $30 a head per day for lunch and dinner, with breakfast already included. Work out your break-even on those two numbers and you will know your margin before you sell a single place.
September and October are the cheapest weeks of our year and the ones that make the margin on an affordable retreat work. Guanacaste is the driest province in Costa Rica, so green-season rain is usually a warm shower late in the afternoon rather than a washout.
Yoga teacher training in Costa Rica
A 200-hour or 300-hour teacher training is a different problem from a seven-day retreat: two to four weeks, the same trainees throughout, and far more contact hours. That needs a venue you can take whole for a month without the rate becoming absurd, a practice space that works for six hours a day rather than one, and food that does not become a daily negotiation.
For a multi-week booking we work out a rate rather than running it week by week. Tell us the dates and the cohort size.
Surf and yoga retreats
A surf and yoga retreat only works if the break is genuinely close, and most Costa Rica venues advertising one are a van ride from the water. The sand is 3 minutes on foot from the gate and the break about 7 — a forgiving sand-bottom beach break near the river mouth for beginners, a reef further south for the people who already surf. Morning practice on the platform, mid-morning in the water, afternoon free. No vehicle in the schedule.
Corporate retreats and offsites
Same property, different week. The covered pavilion takes a working session, the WiFi runs at 200 Mbps, and 6 separate rooms means nobody is sharing with a colleague. The argument for Costa Rica over a hotel conference floor is that people stay — nobody slips away to their room after dinner when dinner is at a long table under lights with the pool behind it.
When to run it
December through April is the dry season: hot, bright, and the window that books furthest ahead. May through November is green season — lower rates, fuller hillsides, and rain that generally arrives late in the afternoon. For a retreat with morning practice and afternoon free time, green season costs you very little and saves your participants a lot.

A retreat that happened here
★★★★★
“One of the best vacation rentals I have ever booked. I highly recommend opting for the Presidential Package — our group loved everything about it. From being picked up at the airport, to the delicious home-cooked meals, to the activity planning, we all felt, well, presidential. It was truly an experience like no other. The pool was a huge highlight. The beach is just at the end of the road, with a great spot for swimming without the rocks about 100 yards to the right, and if you keep going you can take surf lessons. Each bedroom having its own bathroom was great as well. With six separate units this place is perfect for a large family gathering or a mastermind retreat.”

“We did the presidential package and the family went above and beyond to take care of us. I had an issue after check out at the airport and Alberto came back to make sure I was not left alone trying to figure everything out. We plan on coming back and staying next year as well. I had a small baby and my 2 daughters and Karla spent so much time with my daughters and the baby making them feel at home. Anything we wanted for food they made. I hosted a small women's retreat there and having the laundry services and support with the house was so amazing. This honestly felt like coming to stay with family at the beach in Costa Rica.”
